Tutankhamon è solo un bambino quando su ordine del padre, morente per un avvelenamento, è costretto a sposare la sorellina Ankhesenamun e a salire al trono d’Egitto, affiancato dal consiglio del gran visir Ay. Diventato un ragazzo il regnante sente il bisogno di mischiarsi in incognito alla sua gente: è proprio in questo modo che conosce la bella Suhad, una ragazza Mitanni, e Lagus, che diventerà uno dei suoi più fidi consiglieri.
«Avere l’opportunità di interpretare Tutankhamon, è stato incredibile. Sappiamo molto della sua morte, di ciò che è accaduto dopo che furono trovate le sue spoglie, ma ben poco si sa sulla sua vita, di come doveva essere come uomo, tutto è solo ipotesi». L’attore canadese Avan Jogia, parla così di «Tut – il destino di un faraone» (Muse Entertainment) che arriva in prima assoluta in Italia su Deejay tv canale 9 (canale neo-generalista del gruppo Discovery Italia) complessivamente tre puntate da giovedì 5, il 6 e quindi il 13 novembre alle 21:15. Sir Ben Kingsley interpreta il Gran Visir AY, primo ministro dell’impero egiziano. Cresciuto, prende il comando effettivo come Re, AY realizza che la propria posizione è a rischio. E se come suo mentore ha sinceramente a cuore il bene del faraone, complotta segretamente per creare una nuova dinastia a proprio vantaggio.

Ho visto Gandhi quando avevo circa 12 anni, ed è allora che ho capito quello che volevo fare da grande, l’attore. Quindi girare al suo fianco è stato una specie di sogno che si avvera».
E ancora sul suo ruolo dice: «Gli autori hanno affrontato questo racconto con l’approccio di raccontare un’incredibile storia umana, ma anche una specie di film d’azione. Per me è stata un’opportunità grandiosa poter immaginare come Tut doveva essere, come persona, faraone e semi-dio. Sia nella sua figura pubblica che nella sfera privata, due cose ben differenti. Non è come con una figura contemporanea, di cui esistono video, registrazioni, foto e audio. Diciamo che le cose sono spuntate dentro di me in maniera istintiva, è stato un onore potergli dare vita».
Incoronato faraone a soli 9 anni Tutankhamon eredita la più grande potenza al mondo, ma anche un regno dilaniato da feroci contrasti interni. Intorno a lui si intreccia una rete di relazioni in cui ciascuno sembra mirare ai propri interessi. Oltre ad AY, la sorella Ankhesenamun (Sibylla Deen), costretta a diventare sua moglie per mantenere il sangue reale, incapace di dare un erede al marito e per questo a rischio di essere ripudiata, il sacerdote Amun (Alexander Siddig), leader di un culto politeistico che disprezza Tut, fino al generale Horemheb (Nonso Anozie), le cui mire espansionistiche lo portano alla continua ricerca di terre e popoli da conquistare.
Gli unici che sembrano essere saldi al fianco del faraone sono Lagus (Iddo Goldberg), e Suhad (Kylie Bunbury), metà di stirpe Mitanna e metà Egiziana, che salva la vita a Tutferito in battaglia, conquistandolo per sempre. Del suo personaggio, Kingsley dice che «è un uomo i cui pensieri sono invisibili».
Non dice mai bugie e allo stesso tempo mai la verità. Un calcolatore sempre pronto al doppio gioco che muove le sue pedine nell’ombra, osserva, ascolta in silenzio«. Tutankhamon morirà intorno ai 19 anni in circostanze mai accertate, grazie al suo ricco corredo mortuario, uno dei migliori mai conservati, è oggi uno dei faraoni più noti del mondo. Copie della sua celebre maschera funeraria esistono ovunque, mentre la sua mummia è conservata nel sito originario nella Valle dei Re, in Egitto.
