Recollections of people who have actually performed the initiation rituals to Osiris have survived only through some papyrus and stems ranging from the fifteenth century. B.C. to the first century. d.C .: analysis that makes Guilmot in his “Initiates and initiation rites in ancient Egypt” should be placed in parallel with Chapter 125 of the Book of going a day we have briefly summarized above; you will see the ritual as well as various steps in these texts are not always perfectly coincide with the words of the Book, which is probably preserved a more archaic form of initiation.

Please note that Guilmot sees the whole operation initiation as a kind of psychological suffering aimed at a “spiritual perfection”, although it is not clear what he means by “spiritual”, based on “unleashing of emotion”, and its study based, as he himself says, “on joining the philology technique to that of irrational psychology”: the right measures taken by his personal interpretations, with which of course we do not agree, the work done by Guilmot is really important for the knowledge of the actual implementation of technical initiation in ancient Egypt.

osiride

The texts studied by Guilmot are three: the largest is just the latest (papyrus 32 T Leiden, written for a named Horsiesis Priest, Prophet of Amon Ra, the first century AD.), So it is affected by the corruption caused by the spread Mysteries of the classics in Egypt, as indeed is also observed in the description of the ritual made by Apuleius in his Metamorphoses. But the comparison with older texts (inscriptions in the tomb of Amenhotep, the priest of Amon under Thutmose III in the fifteenth century BC. And the statue of Hor, prophet of Amon during the XXII Dynasty in the IX-VIII century BC.) Is used to detect the ‘existence of a parallel initiation process among the various texts, even if they do not match either among themselves or with that reported in the Book of Dead (in comparative table: Chapter CXXV left, right, the highlights of the ritual ). This process can be divided into five phases:

1. The acceptance of the initiate in the “holy place” identified with a temple of Osiris and in some cases the offer of a crown of flowers or foliage, which is found in some graves, like that of Tut-ankh- amon. It probably identifies with the crown cap. XIX of the Book of going a day: “Your father Atum has asked this of justification crown on your brow you will live forever”; the crown, symbol of royalty, is also a symbol of power and its circular shape is a sign of the transcendent world. Apuleius also receives a crown, but at the end of the initiatory path, a crown made of palm fronds, whose tips are a symbol of sun rays: the initiate has become an equal of Ra.
2. The descent below ground or passage through the darkness of the pillared hall of the temple alone or accompanied by priests or by Anubis itself (a priest dressed with the God of the mask), replaced in some of the texts reported by Guilmot from transmitting secret or by reading texts, which he supposed to contain initiation formulas. The meaning of “go underground” or otherwise through a dark place is a symbol of death that the initiate must undergo in order to be reborn. A late antique painting depicts the deceased dressed in white, a sign of ritual purity, holding a crown and his left side Anubis who welcomes him into his arms, while on the left there is a sarcophagus, a sign of the body of the deceased He leaves behind; similarly in the Book of what is now the nell’Amduat XII ends, as seen with the Osiris mummy abandoned on dell’Amduat wall while the Sun-Initiate comes out in the form of Khepri in the arms of Atum.
3. Entry into the underground room, or in a similar place and the “justification” of the initiate who becomes maakheru, “just as a voice.”
4. The regeneration, which occurs through a purifying bath in a basin, which is located next to all the temples or, in the case of Abydos, probably in the ring of water surrounding the central platform, of which we shall speak later.
5. The revelation of God and the transcendent light that goes with it and that you reach through the body of the vision of God or of the reliquary of his head or his body in the tomb, an act which constitutes the culminating and final moment of the ritual.

As you can see, the correspondence with the text of the Book of going a day is not perfect: there too we share similar rituals and with a similar meaning, but in a different order and with some passages that are perhaps more consistent with what one would expect as an initiation ritual, such as the purification should precede and not follow justification, what should be the culmination of the rite, while in the texts studied by Guilmot it is replaced by a kind of enlightenment that comes as a result of the vision of objects sacred, which is similar to that described for example in the Eleusinian mysteries.

tempiosiride

The place where the initiation takes place in the papyrus of Leiden translated by Guilmot is the temple of Osiris at Abydos, in which the worship of God had ancient origins, dating back to the first dynasties, and particularly the part known as Osireion. It is the sector, independent of the real temple is located to the north of it, built by Seti I: you enter through a corridor in direct descent from the west to the east (a sign that the regeneration was following the path of the Sun-Ra) and long about a hundred meters, the walls of which bear engraved texts of the Books of the Dead; at the end of the corridor is reached in a rectangular room, the center of which stands a platform surrounded by a ring of water, for access to which there are two tiers on the short sides.

On the platform there are still two cavities, which is believed to serve to contain the tomb of God and the head of Osiris, the most important relic of all those related to Osiris: the two objects were the focal point of enlightenment as He describes Guilmot. All’Osireion around, there were trees of Persea, the sacred plant a symbol of immortality, and in the papyrus of Leiden transcribed by Guilmot expressly says: “You arrive in the underground room, under the trees (sacred). At the God Osiris (that) you come, the one who sleeps in his tomb. Then in the holy place it is given to the title of Justified “(p. 84).

This description suggests the existence of a burial mound erected over the Osireion had to be planted on which the Persea trees, although some reconstructions do however think that it had an open roof in the middle by a large skylight.
